After a week of dreary weather, almost 200 REALTORS®, Affiliates and guests gathered to celebrate and kick up their heels at the Marriott Courtyard in Bellevue for the SKCAR 2007 Installations and 2006 Awards Banquet held on the evening of December 1, 2006. The evenings festivities included dinner, a silent and live auction and entertainment by The Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band.
The 2006 Board of Directors was recognized for their hard work and dedication to the Association, and the 2007 Board of Directors was installed. Officers for 2007 are: Daniel Kennedy, President; Jason Watabe, President-Elect; D’Ann Jackson, Immediate Past President; Larry Christensen, VP of Business Practices; Keith Nelson, VP of Government & Public Affairs; and Jim Dierst, VP-Elect of Government & Public Affairs.
SKCAR singled out D’Ann Jackson, John L. Scott Mercer Island, among its 8,900+ members for special recognition as “REALTOR® of the Year.” The tribute recognizes outstanding contributions for local, state and national REALTOR® associations and faithfulness to professionalism and the code of ethics.
SKCAR recognized Jackson for involvement with the association’s Board of Directors, along with service on the First Citizen Award Committee and First Citizen Scholarship Committee. She also served on the Strategic Planning Committee. D’Ann is a natural at fundraising and has helped with events for Children’s Hospital as well as events for SKCAR.
Other awards included:
1. REALTOR® Achievement Award Dan Murphy, Windermere Fauntleroy Murphy received the association’s top award for his lengthy commitment to the profession through various leadership positions and committee involvement at local, state and national levels, including service as 2005 president of SKCAR.
2. Government Affairs Volunteer of the Year Award Keith Nelson, Executive Real Estate, Bellevue Nelson was cited for his dedication to Governmental Affairs. He is the 2007 Vice President of Governmental Affairs for SKCAR, and the Chairman of the SKCAR RPAC committee. He is also an RPAC Golden "R" investor, and a President’s Circle member. Nelson has also participated in numerous candidate interviews for SKCAR, and has attended Legislative Hill Days in Olympia and RPAC Legislative Meetings in Washington, D.C.
3. RPAC Award J. Lennox Scott, John L. Scott J. Lennox Scott has been a proactive advocate for the REALTORS® Political Action Committee since its inception. He has served as a state RPAC trustee, he was a member of the RPAC Presidential Advisory Group, and he was recently appointed national RPAC trustee by the National Association of REALTORS®. In addition to serving in formal RPAC roles, Lennox has published numerous articles and white papers in support of RPAC and he proactively encourages his 4,700 sales associates to invest in RPAC. Lennox travels the country speaking about the merits of RPAC and the importance of investing in it. For all of his efforts, Lennox was inducted into the RPAC Hall of Fame in 2004.
4. REALTOR® Community Service Award Rick Baldwin, John L. Scott Bellevue Baldwin is the founder of the Children’s Ride, which is an annual charity motorcycle event designed to benefit uncompensated care at Children’s Hospital. The event has raised $1.5 million since its inception in 1995.
5. Instructor of the Year Award (2 recipients awarded):
Marianne Kingman, Kingman Winslow LLC SKCAR recognized Kingman due to the sucess of her tax seminars that cover a variety of issues including: income tax planning for small business professionals; how to prepare for and avoid audit; resolving problems with the IRS; Section 1031 exchanges as a tax strategy for real property held for investment or business use; and estate planning issues. The success of Ms. Kingman’s tax lectures has been widely attributed to her ability to simplify an otherwise complicated area of law, while using humor in a very affordable format.
Barb Schwarz, STAGEDHOMES.com Schwarz is internationally known as the creator of Staging, and the creator of the Accredited Staging Professional (ASP) designation. Her seminars at SKCAR are extremely popular and she continues to get rave reviews from attendees seeking out the ASP designation.
6. Pacesetter Award Vulcan Enterprises This award is presented to a corporation, firm or organization for its outstanding contribution to the real estate industry and/or the greater community in King County.Vulcan Enterprises was bestowed this award from SKCAR because it is leading one of the largest urban revitalization efforts in the U.S. – the redevelopment of more than 60 acres in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood. When completed, the project will consist of nearly 10 million square feet of new housing, retail, offices, life sciences research, open space and public transportation.
7. Media of the Year Award Eastside Business This award was presented to Eastside Business based on impartial reporting of real estate matters, promotion of fairness in real estate matters, promotion of fairness in real estate practices, community service and support of REALTOR efforts overall.
Also honored were those REALTORS who earned a designation in 2006. REALTORS who pursue professional designations have a distinct competitive edge as a result of their increased expertise and marketability. An NAR 2005 Member Survey shows that REALTORS without an NAR designation earned a median of $40,900, while those that indicated a designation earned a median of $82,900.
