REALTORS® lead the way on recommended solutions for housing crisis
Recently, the Seattle Times published an article, “Region at a crossroads as home-buying power shrinks,” highlighting the many factors contributing to rapidly rising home prices and lack of inventory. Seattle King County REALTORS® have been submitting comments and suggestions for over a year to policymakers on ways to keep housing available and affordable in our area. Smarter planning is needed in the King County area to improve housing inventory. Concerned that growth planning throughout King County has repressed housing supply through insufficient zoning, SKCR, in collaboration with the Master Builders Association, has called upon the King County to improve the quality of data and the process by which cities determine housing capacity needed to accommodate jobs and population growth. This past fall, the Mayor convened the Housing Affordability and Livability Advisory committee (HALA). The committee has been tasked with developing housing recommendations for everything from homelessness on up through market-rate housing. REALTOR® Terry Miller is participating on a HALA subcommittee task with developing strategies to preserve housing, and President Tyler McKenzie is urging Seattle to take bold steps to increase housing inventory.
