Tax reform vote possible this week

Senate Republicans are pushing for a vote on their version of tax reform later this week. Like the House’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the Senate bill would take away incentives for homeownership and reduce the value of homes across the country. An op-ed from 2017 Seattle King County REALTORS® President Sam DeBord for the Puget Sound Business Journal explains how the proposed tax plan would affect Washington homeowners.

“In Rep. Suzan DelBene’s 1st Congressional District, 58.1 percent of homeowners claimed a mortgage interest deduction, and an even larger number – 64.8 percent – claimed a real estate property tax deduction for 2015 (the latest data available). In the 8th Congressional District, where Rep. Dave Reichert serves, 55.5 percent took the MID and 60.8 percent claimed a real estate deduction,” writes DeBord. “[The package] abandons hard-working middle-class taxpayers.”
