Celebrating Fair Housing Month with more housing opportunities

You might remember that last year was the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, the landmark housing legislation that we now commemorate each April during Fair Housing Month. This year, fair housing is just as important as ever.

Fair housing laws protect the American dream of homeownership for everyone. REALTORS® have been working for years to increase housing supply so that anyone that wants to can find a great home that they can afford – but we still have a long way to go.

With the advent of new media, fair housing practices are just as relevant today as they were 50 years ago. To comply with the law, Facebook recently revised its search and advertising policies to ensure that available properties are not marketed on its site in a discriminatory fashion.

This year is poised to be big in our state for creating more housing opportunities. A coalition of REALTORS®, home builders, housing advocates and others called Unlock the Door has been working tirelessly with our legislators to pass common-sense legislative solutions to our housing crisis. From condo liability reform to laws easing ADU restrictions, you can track legislative progress on housing issues here.

More homes and more variety of homes at different price points means more hardworking Washingtonians can access the security, community and wealth-building opportunities that come with owning a home.
