$43,000 in Scholarships awarded to 2020 applicants – top honor is Van Anderson Scholarship

The Seattle First Citizen Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors is excited to announce that thanks to member generosity, 28 out of 63 applicants this year will receive scholarship funding. Scholarships are awarded to high school and college applicants who demonstrate a commitment to community service.

“We had some very highly qualified and deserving applicants this year. Our goal is to fund at least 30% of the applications each year and this year we were able to fund 45%, for a total of $43,000 in awards,” said Foundation Chair and Board Director Sharon O’Mahony. “The Foundation exists to help Seattle King County REALTORS® members and their families have access to great educational opportunities, and we want to thank all the members who contributed to the Foundation.”

Long-time member and past President Van Anderson

This year, the Scholarship Foundation is naming a scholarship for long-time member and past President Van Anderson. The high school application chosen by the Foundation to receive the Evangeline “Van” Anderson $5000.00 scholarship is Bellevue High School senior Rachel Park.

“I am overwhelmed by this huge honor,” said Van, upon learning of the named scholarship. “I am in my 84th day of quarantine and only 3 brief glimpses of the outside of my apartment in that time. I have no words to thank the Foundation for doing this in my name. I have tried through the years to mentor young REALTORS® and could not be more proud to have this in my name. Thank you.”

In the past, the Foundation has recognized Board member Peter Freet and real estate attorney John Demco with special named scholarships.

The chief fundraising event for the Scholarship Foundation is the annual Battle of Barristers, which has been postponed because of Washington’s “stay at home” order. The future date and location of the Battle will be announced later this year.
