Congratulations to our Q2 Good Neighbor, Carmen Halstrom!
Since 2007, Carmen Halstrom has made a significant impact in our community through her volunteer work supporting children, youth, and families who are served by Youth Eastside Services (YES), the leading behavioral health services provider in East King County for children and youth, ages birth to 22, and their families. Her dedication to her community has earned her our Seattle King County REALTORS® Q2 Good Neighbor Award. This award goes beyond verbal recognition and a certificate as Youth Eastside Services will also receive $500 to further support their work in our community.
Just like the National Association of REALTORS® Good Neighbor Awards, we recognize REALTOR® members who make a positive impact on their community and gifts the organization through which they volunteer time and talents.
YES is a lifeline for kids and families coping with challenges such as emotional distress, substance abuse and violence. Through intervention, outreach and prevention, YES builds confidence and personal responsibility, strengthens family relationships, and advocates for a safer community that cares for its youth.
Carmen has volunteered her time for young people in need, becoming a mentor in YES’ Success Mentoring Program in 2017 to youth at risk of behavioral issues and dropping out of school. From financial and emotional troubles at home, to academic problems at school, to behavioral issues and relationship issues with their friends, young people in this program benefit greatly from the guidance and support of caring adults like Carmen. In this program, she helped young people to achieve academically, while also helping them develop protective factors and emotional wellness.
“I believe we are all here to help one another in our community – we all have the responsibility to make the world a better place,” said Carmen. “Addiction and mental illness cut us off from things that give life meaning. We need a connection in our community and that is what YES does. YES meets kids where they are. We need to let kids know they are not alone and YES is there to help. I love YES and the work they do!”
Carmen has also volunteered for many years to host tables at YES’ annual Invest in Youth breakfast event, inviting community members to come and learn about our key programs and services for young people with behavioral, mental health and substance use issues. In June of 2020, Carmen joined the YES Board of Trustees, where she continues to be an advocate for YES in the community. Through her years of volunteering with YES, she has made it her mission to help children and youth in our community get the help they need to recover, heal, and thrive.
Seattle King County REALTORS® congratulates Carmen for her achievement and appreciates her huge contributions and dedication to our community.
“The Good Neighbor Award committee is pleased to present the Q2 SKCR Good Neighbor Award to Carmen who has dedicated a ton of time to benefit youth in her community,” said Caitlin Olsen, Good Neighbor Award Committee Chair. “This award is to recognize her commitment to balancing her successful real estate career with her multiple volunteer efforts, and especially her extensive time dedicated to Youth Eastside Services. We would also like to thank all Q2 nominees and look forward to presenting our Q3 Good Neighbor Award.”
