Over $52,000 in Scholarships Awarded to 2023 Applicants

The Seattle-King County First Citizen Scholarship Foundation is excited to announce that thanks to member generosity, 20 applicants will receive a 2023 scholarship. Scholarships are awarded to high school and college applicants, as well as our REALTOR® members, who demonstrate a commitment to community service. 2023 is the 25th year the Foundation has been awarding scholarships.

“I would like to express my gratitude to all the other committee members who generously took time out of their busy real estate practices to review scholarship applications and help reward this very deserving group of students,” said Sydnie Taylor, Scholarship Foundation Chair. “Together, we had the privilege of witnessing the passion and commitment of a generation of young leaders who are looking beyond themselves and striving to create a greater good in our communities. These applicants have left us all feeling inspired and hopeful for the future. If they are any indication of what’s to come, the future is bright with the promise of positive change.”

The Foundation is awarding the $5,000 Margo Wheeler Memorial Scholarship to the top-rated college applicant, Mathida Ngamsiripol, sponsored by REALTOR® member Wanwa Chan. Through experiences volunteering with people experiencing homelessness in shelters and hospitals, this UW student will begin a Master’s in Public Health program in September, studying epidemiology. She is committed to anti-racist public health practice, community empowerment and storytelling, and equitable health interventions for unhoused populations.

Beloved REALTOR® leader Margo Wheeler.

Each year the Foundation considers naming a scholarship as a tribute to leaders within the Seattle King County REALTOR® community. This year the Foundation honors Margo Wheeler, a beloved leader and former managing broker at John L. Scott Real Estate Tacoma University Place. In a 30-year career in real estate, Margo held numerous leadership roles at the National Association of REALTORS®, Washington REALTORS®, and the Tacoma-Pierce County Association of REALTORS®. Margo specialized in serving military families and others facing difficult transitions. Learn more about Margo’s legacy here.

The chief fundraising event for the Scholarship Foundation is the annual Battle of Barristers, which is a fundraising event that brings members legal advice while benefitting the Foundation. Save the date for this year’s Battle of the Barristers and the return to an in-person event on October 24 in Bellevue.
