Turning Recovery Into Purpose: Scott Brown’s Journey of Giving Back

Seattle King County REALTORS® is proud to recognize Scott Brown of eXp Realty as the 3rd Quarter recipient of the Good Neighbor Award for his outstanding community service through Recovery Beyond, a nonprofit organization that supports individuals in recovery from substance abuse through fitness, connection, outdoor adventure, and shared experience.
Since joining Recovery Beyond in 2017, Scott has volunteered hundreds of hours each year mentoring individuals in recovery through hiking, fitness, and beginner mountaineering programs designed to build confidence, resilience, accountability, and connection.
What began as simply assisting with hiking programs evolved into nearly a decade of leadership and service. Scott has served on the organization's Board of Directors, led its Peer Advisory Council as president, helped develop fitness programming, supported community outreach and social media efforts, and created branded merchandise to promote Recovery Beyond's mission.
Scott's commitment to this work is deeply personal. He spent two decades in the throes of addiction before enrolling in a recovery program with the Salvational Army in 2012. “Getting clean” gave him a purpose and a mission: “to help others who are still suffering find hope and a path forward.” He knows firsthand how lonely and uncertain recovery can be, especially in the early days. By introducing those in recovery to physical challenges and outdoor experiences, Scott helps them realize they are capable of far more than they believed possible.
Over the years, Scott's volunteer work has impacted hundreds of people. Through outdoor challenges and mentorship, he helps participants discover strengths they never knew they had. Whether completing a difficult hike, reaching a mountain summit, or simply showing up consistently for a supportive community, participants gain confidence and a renewed sense of purpose that extends far beyond the trail.
"Watching someone who once felt hopeless stand on a mountain summit is a powerful reminder that recovery is not only possible, it can lead to strength, purpose, and a new life," Scott shared.
In the past year alone, Scott has contributed more than 700 volunteer hours and donated equipment, supplies, transportation, and other resources to support Recovery Beyond's programming. His dedication has helped strengthen both the organization and the recovery community it serves.
Scott's impact has also been recognized nationally and throughout Washington's recovery community. In 2025, he received the Inside Real Estate Helping Hand Award, an honor presented to just three real estate professionals nationwide for their community service. He was also recognized by the Washington Recovery Alliance for his contributions to the recovery movement.
Through his service, leadership, and unwavering compassion, Scott demonstrates what it means to be a Good Neighbor. His work helps individuals move from isolation to connection, from hardship to hope, and from addiction to a life of purpose.
